getting settled

We’ve been in our new place for well over a week now, and it’s gradually starting to feel like home. Slowly. Sometimes. In fits and starts.

We’re unpacking boxes.  We’re hanging things on the walls.  We’re child-proofing.  We’ve had a handful of (very informal) dinner guests.  We’ve put things in the mailbox and raised the little red flag.  We’re meeting new neighbors.

We’re learning all the little, intimate details about the house.  Which doors don’t close all the way unless you really pull.  How to load the dishwasher to absolute maximum capacity.  What the sunlight coming in through the back windows looks like at 8, 12, 2, 4.

We’re unpacking boxes, and we’re still looking for a few important things.  Nathan can’t find his drill bits.  I haven’t found my framed photos of the babies when they were freshly babies.

The babies are saying their words here.  Ben says, “No pants!”  and “I need milk!”  and “I happy,” and “Do running again?”  Maddie is saying her first words here: “mama, dada, book, bath, cat.”

I’m cooking meals.  I’m putting all my cookbooks as I come across them on the kitchen counter next to the microwave.  I’m reading other books, too.

Nathan’s making music now.  Right now.  In the play room, where all our instruments live.

It’s beginning to feel like home now.  Right now.  Slowly.  In fits and starts.
