This morning I decided to take the beebs to the library. We didn’t have anything else to do, and we needed to get out of the house. It’s too damn hot to go for a walk around the neighborhood. Plus for about a week now, Ben has been asking to watch a DVD we checked out and returned already, and I have a couple of overdue books. We’d go check the DVD out again, and I’d renew my books–it sounded win-win. I loaded up the babies and the books and drove across Burnet Road to our new neighborhood branch. The whole time Ben is in the back seat chanting, “Library. library. library.”
Turns out the North Village branch is closed on Thursdays. Nuts. Ben still had fun putting one of my books in the book drop and then running around the shaded entrance, a crazed little blonde homunculus in his green bucket hat and crocs. He clearly didn’t grok the concept of the library being closed–he banged on the glass doors a couple of times and completely ignored me when I said it was time to go. I finally convinced him to get back in the car without a struggle by telling him we’d go to a bookstore instead.
So we drove down Lamar to Book People, where I’ve been wanting to pick up a copy of Mike Stellar anyways. The kids books are upstairs, I thought. We walk up the stairs together and by the time we get to the top he’ll be so exhausted that he’ll be relatively docile, he’ll stay right with me, no fuss. I grossly underestimated his stamina.
So, sorry to whoever else was on the second floor of Book People this morning. The woman wearing the 7-month-old infant, trying to wrangle the screeching toddler running back and forth in front of the stairs, that was me. The woman dragging said screeching toddler bodily to the car in the parking lot a few minutes later? Also me. Many thanks to the kind woman who picked up the copy of Mike Stellar that I dropped halfway across the parking lot. I definitely couldn’t go back for it with both babes in my arms, and somebody probably would’ve run over it by the time I got both babes safely strapped in the car and got back to it. Thank you so much for picking it up for me.
It seems I’ve discovered yet another activity that shouldn’t be attempted with two under two unless I have at least a 1:1 adult to kiddo ratio.
Maddie isn’t napping, and Nathan’s working late tonight. Groovy.

Definitely been there. I hope this stage passes quickly for you.
Ugh! Why is it closed on Thursdays?! The same thing happened to me and my 19 month old son (whom I roused from a nap to get there before dinner time) a few weeks ago and I was so cranky about it. There were employee (?) cars in the parking lot so we got all unbuckled and walked right up to the door and everything before realizing. Such a bummer.
